Sam Meers, 86, a resident of Amazonia, Mo. Passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Shepherds House in St. Joseph, MO. He was born December 3, 1929 in Amazonia, MO to Harrison and Nina (Lewis) Meers and lived his entire life in the Amazonia area. Sam was a devout member of St. Johns Church. He married Opal Stinnett at St. John's Church in Amazonia on June 17, 1949.
Sam was employed with Swift and Company for 20 plus years. He then worked for Missouri Gas Energy as a welder until retiring in 1992 after 22 years. Sam then established the Meers Pipe and Welding Company where he built custom barbecue smokers and pond overflow system for customers throughout the region. He later drove cross country for Herzog and school buses for Savannah R3 District.
When his boys were young, he coached fast pitch softball for the Amazonia A's. He was an avid hunter of quail, pheasant, and mushrooms. Sam raised and trained hunting dogs.
Sam was a member of member of Amazonia Lions Club, hosted many great parties' in his shop, and other civic activities in Amazonia. He was active in the St. Joseph Yacht Club and loved boating. He enjoyed square dancing with the Tanglefoot Squares.
Most of all Sam loved people, he was always there if someone needed help. He especially loved his family and was proud of all their accomplishments. His wife Opal and children have many wonderful memories of his kindness and generosity.
Sam is survived by his wife, Opal (Stinnett) Meers; two sons, Mike Meers, and James & Dana Meers; one daughter, Sandra & Bud Wintcher; six grandchildren, Amanda Wintcher-Vince, Jamie Thompson, Kyle Maxwell, Kelcee Schmidt, Jakob Ehlert, Harrison Meers, and seven great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00AM Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Breit - Hawkins Funeral Home in Savannah, MO. Open visitation and family receiving hours will be Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 9:00AM - 11:00AM at Breit - Hawkins Funeral Home in Savannah, MO. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Amazonia, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Church, Amazonia, MO. The church is recovering from a recent arson fire.
