SAVANNAH
Mary Francis Spencer, Savannah, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at Shady Lawn Nursing Home in Savannah, MO. She was born September 17, 1937 in Savannah, MO to Francis and Mary (Shaffer) Coyle. She married Freddy "Fritz" Spencer on June 15, 1956 who preceded her in death in 2012.
She graduated from Savannah High School in 1955, attended Gard's Business College and started working at Associated Grocers (AG) in St. Joseph, MO. She started out as switchboard operator/receptionist, then order desk, eventually working her way up to payroll and secretary. Whenever any of the office girls went on vacation, she was able to fill in for them. AG and Beaty HyKlas merged forming Affiliated Foods, and a new warehouse was built in Elwood, KS. Mary continued to work for Affiliated Foods as a secretary to the grocery buyers. A few years later, she was promoted to a grocery buyer being one of the first female buyers to work in that capacity. Eventually, she was promoted to inventory control manager. Mary enjoyed bowling, bingo, her grandchildren, and her dog, Checkers.
Survivors include her three children; Becky (Rick) Wisehart of Kansas City, MO; Vicky (Murray) Lewis of Savannah, and Wesley (Becky) Spencer of Savannah; sister, Joanne Coyle of Savannah; brother, Steve (Glenda) Coyle of Branson West; grandchildren, Grant Lewis, Spencer Lewis, Sydney Spencer, Shayna Spencer, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Raymond.
A Celebration of life will be held at Breit-Hawkins Funeral Home, Savannah, MO on Saturday, August 17th, 2019 at 11:00am. Casual dress is encouraged. Family will receive and visitors at Breit-Hawkins Funeral Home on Saturday, August 17th, 20019 from 10:00am to 11:00am. A private burial service will follow at a later date in Savannah Cemetery, Savannah, MO. Memorial contribution can be made to The American Diabetes Association.
