Mary L. Smith

1927-2019

NODAWAY, Mo. – Mary Lorene (Patterson) Smith, 92, of Nodaway, died December 10, 2019, at a Savannah health-care center.

She was born on November 23, 1927, near Amazonia, Mo., to Carl and Ruby (Martie) Patterson.

She lived her life in Nodaway. Mary graduated from the State Teaching College, Maryville, Mo., and taught at Callen School near Nodaway. She was a member of the Amazonia Lion's Club, an election official in Amazonia, Nodaway Homemaker's Club, the Jolly Music Makers, ran concessions at the Amazonia baseball field, was a quilter and a gardener and a genealogist. She volunteered for the OATS bus, served on the board for Shady Lawn nursing home, and in fall she worked at Schweizer's apple house. She enjoyed having everybody over for her Sunday family dinners, because family was at the heart of everything she did.

On December 31, 1946, she married Vance Norton Smith in Atchison, Kansas. He preceded her in death in 2005.

Survivors include her granddaughter, Stephanie Teaney, Nodaway, raised in the home; her sons, Jerry (Jill), Ronnie, and Mickey (Candy) Smith, all of Nodaway; daughter-in-law, Barbara Smith of St. Joseph; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Lloyd, Harold, Ernest, and John Patterson; a daughter, Janet L. Uehlin; a granddaughter, Brandy Smith; and a son, Steven A. Smith.

Visitation and family receiving hours will be Thursday, December 12, 2019 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Breit-Hawkins Funeral Home, Savannah.  Funeral services will be Friday, December 13, 2019 at 11:00am at Breit-Hawkins Funeral Home.  Inurnment will be at a later date.
