Garnett M. (Hoover) Hughes, 100, Savannah, Missouri passed away Thursday, June 14, 2018 at a local hospital. Garnett was born on November 2, 1917 to Clifford & Lula Mae (Biggs) Hoover in Rosendale, Missouri. She had one brother Hobert. Garnett's parents were victims of the flu epidemic of 1918, passing away within a week of each other. Garnett was only 11 months old at the time and was taken to be raised by her Aunt and Uncle George and Nancey Hoover.
Garnett graduated from Savannah High School in 1936 and spent her entire life in the Savannah area. She married Harry Hughes on November 20, 1945, the day he returned from overseas duty following WWII.
Garnett was employed by the Andrew County Mutual Telephone Company where she worked as chief operator, clerk, cashier, and commercial clerk. Garnett was on the switch board the day Pearl Harbor was bombed and sent out the news across the lines. She retired after 38 years of service with the telephone company.
Following her retirement, she worked as a cook in the Savannah School District. In 2012, she was honored by the Andrew County RSVP for 37 years of volunteer services to the community. Garnett was a member of the Savannah Christian Church. She was also a member of the SewMore Club, the FriendlyQuilters, and the Royal Neighbor Club.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 18, 2018 from 9 am to 10 am at the Savannah First Christian Church. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 10 am at the First Christian Church. Burial will be at the Savannah Cemetery. Breit & Hawkins Funeral Home is in charge of the services. The family suggests memorial gifts to be given to Highway Patrol Troop H, in St. Joseph
